To become a professional architect in Malaysia, you need to fulfill the following requirements:
- Education: Obtain a recognized degree in architecture from a Malaysian Board of Architects (LAM) accredited program. The program must be at least five years in duration and should lead to a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree OR other equivalent programs equivalent to LAM Part I and LAM Part II qualifications.
- Practical Experience: Complete the Practical Experience Scheme (PES) as prescribed by LAM. The PES requires a minimum of two years of practical training under the supervision of a registered architect. During this period, you will gain experience in various aspects of architecture, including design, project management, and construction.
- LAM Part III Examination: After completing the required practical training, you need to attend professional interview to assess your overall competence, understanding of architectural practice, and knowledge of local regulations and codes. Once passed, you can take the LAM Part III Examination. This examination focuses on your professional practice and covers areas such as professional ethics, management, and contract administration.
- Registration: Upon successful completion of the LAM Part III Examination and the professional interview, you can apply for registration as a professional architect with LAM. Once registered, you will receive a practicing certificate that allows you to legally practice architecture in Malaysia.
Provision for graduates from non-accredited school;
- LAM Part I Examination: After completing your degree, you must pass the LAM Part I Examination. This examination assesses your knowledge in architecture and related fields.
- LAM Part II Examination: Once you have successfully passed the LAM Part I Examination, you can proceed to the LAM Part II Examination. This examination evaluates your competence in architectural design and technical subjects.
